A Tribute To Betty Fitch

Betty and Mal

FITCH BETTY MARGARET, passed away on January 29, 2000, with her husband Mal and her three children at her bedside. Born to George and Marie Baker in Baltimore on October 18, 1928, she is survived by her husband of 51 years, Malcolm, and her three children, Kathy, Debra and Doug. She is also survived by five grandsons, Jordan, Andrew, Jonathan, Jacob and Caleb.

She married Mal at Fort Meade, Maryland and began a career as a singer and entertainer with her husband, first as a television performer at WHIO in Dayton, Ohio. After coming to Texas, she nurtured three children, became a gourmet cook, and starred as the featured singer with the Mal Fitch Orchestra for thirty years.

She appeared at every Governor's Inaugural, beginning with John Connally and lasting through Bill Clements. She also appeared with many big-name stars including Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Mel Torme, Ben Vereen, Peggy Lee, Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, Toni Tenille, Frank Sinatra Jr., Robert Goulet, and many others. She also sang at parties for Presidents Gerald Ford, George Bush, and Richard Nixon.

She also performed at society parties and debutante presentations in Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Midland, Amarillo, Houston, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Shreveport, San Antonio, Tyler, and Longview. When she retired from singing in 1989, ``she really retired'', taking up golf and helping to take care of the Betmal Ranch and serving as President of BMF Agency which booked many stars and bands for their convention clients.

Betty is also survived by her six sisters. Services will be held near Hawkins, TX at 2:00 PM on Thursday, Feb 3. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

In spite of all of her accomplishments, the things she loved most were giving love to others, raising and nurturing her 3 children, and being a devoted and loving wife. Mom, you were an angel here and I know you are singing with the angels in Heaven. I miss those simpler days of innocence while growing up. I miss you. I love you.
